PARKERSBURG -- Fort Boreman Park had been hit in a couple of spots with painted graffiti and damage to some of the picnic shelters.
Wood County Maintenance Supervisor Todd Nonamaker appeared before the Wood County Commission on Monday to discuss recent vandalism at the county park.
"We have spray paint on the natural rock up there," he said. "Some of the ornamental capstones at one of the picnic shelters have been broken."
The capstones cost around $400 a piece, Nonamaker said, adding he has the ability to make four. He needs six to make replacements.
County officials said they will be checking security camera footage to see if they can identify the people involved.
"I hope our cameras picked something up," said Commission President Blair Couch.
Nonamaker said he will be filing a police report to document the incident.
"If we can find someone culpable in this, I want to press charges," he said.
Couch said the county will look at upgrading the cameras at the park and look at higher resolution cameras and putting them in key areas around the park.
Nonamaker said the capstones were broken over the weekend and it is believed the painted graffiti was done around last Thursday or Friday. The graffiti was on a rock face along a trail just off the boardwalk walking path.
Nonamaker described the graffiti as "a quote and some initials."
Maintenance crews will have to sandblast the rockface in order to remove the paint.
In other business:
¯ The commission will meet at 9 a.m. today in the commission chambers in order to set the county levy rate.
¯ The commission will be looking for a new compliance officer. Current Compliance Officer Sarah Robinson has accepted a new job. Commissioners are looking at people who have prior law enforcement experience. The compliance officer goes out and inspects properties that have fallen into disrepair or have an abundance of trash, works with an engineer to determine if structures are safe and determines if the property is habitable. They work with the property owner in trying to get the property cleaned up. They present reports to the commission and help facilitate hearings with property owners.
