A program about quilts will be presented at the Civil War Round Table of the Mid-Ohio Valley at 7 p.m. May 18 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 320 Second St., Marietta.
Meta Van Nostran, M.A., instructor, author and textile conservator from Albany, Ohio, will present "Quilts: American History Beyond the Textbook."
Quilt styles change like fashion. Every quilt has a story of family and politics, economics, war, faith, love, community and more.
Van Nostran's trunk show will include three dozen examples illustrating history during the middle of the 19th century, a time of invention, war and patriotism.
Van Nostran is a retired high school instructor and adjunct professor at Rio Grande University and Ohio University. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education at Ohio University and studied textiles at the Glasgow School of Art. She is active in textile arts as an instructor, curator and judge in exhibitions and competitions.
Special interests include textiles research and conservation, including the restoration of antique and vintage needlework. She has written two books, "Quilts and Stories from the Time of the Civil War" and "Quilts and Stories from World War II: Transforming Traditions."
Van Nostran is a teaching artist at The Dairy Barn Arts Center, Athens.
Meetings are free and the public is invited. Light refreshments will be served before and following the meeting.
Donations will be accepted to defray a portion of the cost of the event.
The program is partially funded through a matching grant program from the Ohio Arts Council.
The meeting venue is accessible for those with mobility limitations. Accommodations for other disabilities will be considered upon request.
