The Marietta City School District Board of Education approved the names of students for graduation during its regular meeting Monday night.
Graduates will walk the stage and receive their diplomas on May 28 at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center located on the Marietta College campus.
"Congratulations to all the students graduating from Marietta High School and the Marietta School District," Board President Sam Tuten said. "As a former alumni it was a great day for me, and I can't wait to be there on Sunday."
Superintendent Brad Silvus talked about the end of the school year and Director of Curriculum & Technology Tim Fleming talked about summer plans.
Fleming said there are new ELA options this year and the first day of professional development will be June 2.
"So, we have three sets of training for that day," Fleming said. "We have our K-2 staff, which will take place here (at the board offices), our 3-5 will be at MES (Marietta Elementary School), and 6-8 at the high school. That will be our first set of the new ELA adoption."
Director of Student Services Alison Woods told the board about the Vision Bus program through Vision To Learn, a nonprofit that helps overcome obstacles to vision care, that will allow all students to receive an initial free vision screening.
"So, they'll do screenings for kids that need screenings every year," Woods said.
"Like kindergarten, first, or third and fifth, and they'll do it at the same time so that they're not being pulled out of class. We have all the dates set and are very excited about it."
Athletic Director Cody Venderlic talked to the board about the new contract with BSN Sports and Nike. He said this wouldn't take away from local businesses the school uses for fundraisers and spirit week but uniforms would have to be bought through them.
"Whenever it comes to basically what the team would wear out onto the field, onto the court, when they're stepping off of the bus, it would all be Nike apparel, unless Nike couldn't provide us with exactly what we needed," Venderlic said. "If not, then we would get through BSN for something different but basically, it could not be one of the rival companies."
The board approved a number of donations that included $975 from the Boys Golf Camp to Marietta Boys Golf, $1,000 from the Marietta Boys Soccer t-shirt fundraiser and $7,043 from the Youth League Volleyball for Marietta volleyball.
The next scheduled meeting of the board is for June 26 at 6 p.m. at 111 Academy Drive.
