The Castle is offering three camps again this summer, according to Castle Education Director Kyle Yoho. He recommended that parents complete registration as soon as possible for the three programs, since spaces are beginning to fill up.
¯ History Camp: Ups and Downs 1920 to 1940 (for Grades 3-6)
July 10-14, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Travel back in time with a five-day camp filled with historic hands-on activities for students in grades 3 through 6. This year's camp will explore the local, state, national and global events of 1920 to 1940, including the boom of the "Roaring '20s" and the hardships of the Great Depression. Campers will be involved in activities such as crafts, games, tours, music and dancing.
¯ Archeology Camp (for Grades 6-8)
July 17-20, 9-11 a.m.
The Castle's Archaeology Camp is for students entering grades 6 through 8. Campers will experience an actual archaeological dig on the site of one of the oldest pottery manufacturing sites in Ohio, learn how archaeologists sort and sift for objects and examine and identify artifacts. Professional archaeologist Wes Clarke will be leading the camp.
¯ Archeology Field School (High school and adults)
July 31-Aug. 3, 6-8 p.m.
The Castle's Archaeology Field School is geared for high school students and adults. The week-long experience will begin with introductory discussions and hands-on activities regarding the goals and methods of modern archaeology. Field work activity will be at a moderate pace that can be geared to the preference of each participant. Participants will be excavating an actual archaeological site, processing the recovered artifacts and discussing what they reveal about past human activity. Clarke will be conducting the camp.
