State COVID-19 rate declines, area numbers drop or hold

Editor’s note: With the school year ending for area students and the state and federal emergency declarations over, this is the last regular Marietta Times update on COVID-19 statistics. Readers can view the new case rates, which are updated on Thursday afternoons, online at coronavirus.ohio.gov/home.

Washington County saw a decrease in its number of new COVID-19 cases over the last two weeks, but its rate per 100,000 people still exceeded the statewide average, which dropped for the 14th consecutive week, according to statistics from the Ohio Department of Health.

From May 18-31, the county of 59,911 residents reported 36 new cases for a rate of 60.1 per 100,000 people, fourth highest in the state. From May 11-24 there were 43 new cases and the rate of 71.8 was third.

Noble County, which is usually near the bottom of Ohio’s 88 counties in terms of case rates, ranked eighth in the most recent period. Six reported cases among its 14,424 residents gave the county a rate of 41.6 per 100,000. Those are the same numbers as the previous period, when Noble County’s rate was the 14th highest.

Morgan County, which had the state’s highest rate five weeks ago, posted three new cases over the last period, its rate of 20.7 per 100,000 falling to 47th. With seven cases in the earlier span, there was a rate of 48.2 per 100,000 that ranked seventh.

Monroe County, population 13,654, dropped from three new cases to two and its rate from 22 per 100,000 (57th) to 14.6 (69th).

Athens County, population 65,327, again had the lowest rate in the area. For both periods, there were five new cases reported. The rate of 7.7 per 100,000 ranked 86th and 83rd, respectively.

The statewide average of new cases dropped from 30.5 to 25.8.

Since the pandemic’s start in early 2020, the deaths of 42,292 Ohioans have been attributed to COVID-19. There have been 3,451,602 cases reported.
