Belpre Council talks water service upgrades

By Wayne Towner 2 min read

BELPRE -- The city of Belpre is continuing its efforts to upgrade water service for its residents.

At Monday's Belpre City Council meeting, council voted 4-3 to approve the second reading of a resolution authorizing the city to apply for, accept and enter into a Water Supply Revolving Loan Account agreement for design and/or construction of water facilities and designating a dedicated repayment source for the loan.

The loan would be for $100,400 for 0% interest over a five-year period. One additional reading will be scheduled at a future council meeting.

The loan covers design aspects of such a potential project and construction would be covered under a separate loan agreement which would need to be approved by council for a larger amount over a longer period.

Council will also be looking at similar resolutions regarding needed upgrades to its sewer infrastructure in the future.

In his mayor's report, Mayor Michael Lorentz reported two houses were demolished on Walnut Street last week leaving one more on the building demolition and revitalization grant.

Lorentz said city officials met with a couple of trucking companies to help eliminate semis travelling on residential streets. It seems their navigation doesn't take into consideration the width of the streets or corners. Some signage may be needed to help this process, he said.

Lorentz said Mullen Baptist Church has rented the Civitan Park Pool for Aug. 8 from 6-9 p.m. for a welcome back to school party. All students at Belpre City Schools will be welcome.

Committee meetings were scheduled prior to the next council meeting on July 24, including the Utilities Committee at 6:15 p.m. and Finance/Audit at 6:30 p.m.

Starting at /week.
