NEW MATAMORAS -- The Frontier Local Schools Board of Education voted to update school boundary lines around one of their buildings and heard a proposal regarding a vocational agricultural building at Thursday's meeting.

Kurt Bohlen, vocational agriculture teacher at Frontier High School, brought a proposal to the board to build a place that houses animals students raised for Future Farmers of America programs.

"What we're proposing is an agricultural building that would house about 15 kids' animals," he said.

Bohlen said he saw a need for the building because students didn't have a place to house their animals.

"We have a problem in this area. Kids don't have a place to put their animals. For the ones that live outside of town and don't have pens, we build pens. If they live in Newport or New Matamoras, they don't have that option," he said.

Bohlen said he has done research for potential contractors to bid pricing, but the final drawings needed to be verified through a state permit.

Board member Joani Reese asked Bohlen if the FFA club would fund the building. Bohlen said he had heard an anonymous donor wants to pledge $75,000 towards this project. He said it was the same donor who donated $40,000 to the Matamoras Elementary School playground. However, he didn't know the donor's identity.

Bohlen said the FFA has $45,000 to run its program. He said he wouldn't want to use all of the money toward the building. His ideal maximum price point would be $125,000.

In other business, Carol Evans Danver, clerk for the Village of Matamoras, brought a map depicting proposed school property lines around Matamoras Elementary. She said the current lines were based on an old entrance to the school. The current line is on Maple Street and the change would extend the territory down Grandview Avenue.

Danver said she worked with the Ohio Department of Transportation to change the lines but needed the board's approval. The board unanimously approved the change under new business on the agenda.

The next regular board meeting will take place Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. at the FHMS Media Center.
