PARKERSBURG -- A ribbon cutting will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Point Park Gateway Mural on the floodwall, officials announced.
Among participating dignitaries will be Mayor Tom Joyce, West Virginia University at Parkersburg President Torie Jackson, Parkersburg Art Center Director Jessie Siefert, Greater Parkersburg CVB Executive Director Mark Lewis and Amanda Stevens of Downtown PKB. Joyce will recognize the work of more than 60 community painters and artist Nichole Westfall.
The mural was commissioned by the Arts Collaborative of the Mid-Ohio Valley hosted by WVU-P and partially funded with a grant from the City of Parkersburg to the Art Center.
Excitement has grown over the mural and the beauty it adds to the floodwall, according to Siefert.
Comments on the Arts Collaborative's Facebook site include "I adore how approachable the new mural makes this gate," "So beautiful" and "The valley is becoming so colorful. I love it."
Design elements included in the mural, according to Westfall's description, are pollinator plants native in West Virginia, pink and red tulips representing caring, good wishes and love and an oriole, eastern meadowlark and a purple finch.
