BELPRE -- For most students in Belpre, Thursday marked the first day of school along with serving as the regular August meeting for the Belpre City Schools Board of Education.

"Things have been great … everything went smoothly," Superintendent Jeff Greenley said Thursday.

While students in first through 12th grades began the 2023-24 school year, kindergarten students will begin on staggered days Aug. 22-24.

During the school board meeting, board members approved ticket prices for athletic events for the 2023-2024 school year as recommended by the athletic director. For varsity and junior varsity events, season passes will be $175 for families, $60 for adults and $25 for students, senior citizens and veterans. Individual ticket prices will be $6 for adults and $4 for students, senior citizens and veterans.

For seventh and eighth grade events, ticket prices are $6 for adults and $4 for students, senior citizens and veterans.

In his superintendent's report, Greenley said the Belpre High School track project is scheduled for completion Saturday. The former bowling alley near the high school has been demolished and environmental work for the demolition of the former elementary school on the BHS campus has been completed, he said. The actual demolition of the building could take place by the end of the calendar year, Greenley said.

In other action, the board approved K-12 grade student fees for 2023-2024 and the K-12 grade student handbook for 2023-2024, both as presented to the board.

The board also voted to accept the following gifts/donations: donation of a 2023 CFMoto UFORCE 1000 LX UTV to Belpre Performing Arts Boosters valued at $16,512; anonymous donation of 25 Parkersburg News and Sentinel daily newspapers for educational purposes for the 2023-24 school year, with 20 delivered to the high school and five to the elementary school; two $200 gift cards to BES and BHS principals for school supplies by United Pool as part of the car show; and $561 cash donation from Mirror Image Car Show. Vendors participating were United Rental (generator use), Brittany's Baked Goods, and Aaron Oliver. Cash proceeds were from the car show held Aug. 12 at the district's Central Office to be deposited in the General Fund for school supplies.
