Career Center BOE receives anonymous donation of $150K for 15 programs

The Washington County Career Center Board of Education Thursday night approved several resolutions including an anonymous donation of $150,000 for 15 high school programs.
The fourth donation to the Career Center from the anonymous contributor, the funds will be evenly split for class resources.
Superintendent Tony Huffman reported a utility line will have to be replaced under the school.
"But this is also a good thing because we were looking to redo the flooring where this is being done as well," he said.
Enrollment at the Career Center also was a key topic. Enrollment for the 2023-24 school year is 283 incoming students, 268 returning and 20 sophomore students for a total of 571 students.
"On July 31, we had 80% of the students show up for orientation," Secondary Director Mike Elliot said. "We will be having a cookout on Aug. 15 for them as well and we're really going to be stressing attendance."
Student enrollment for the school year is 7 or 8% higher than last year, Huffman said.
"We will be setting a new record for the third year in a row now for enrollment," he said.
Evan Schaad, Adult Technical Training director at the Career Center, spoke about the Equity for Each Grant, First Choice Initiative.
The grant to be received will be "for marketing resources for high school programs," Schaad said.
He also discussed the possibility of an EMT basic program and a release program for people to receive their GEDs.
The next regular meeting is 6 p.m. Sept. 14 in the annex board room at the Career Center.
