Marietta BOE hears stadium update, receives education grant

Marietta City Schools Board of Education heard updates on a stadium project and received a grant towards a county-wide education project at Monday's meeting.
Superintendent Brad Silvus said in the spring he met with all six Washington County superintendents regarding the status of creating a single site for students struggling behaviorally. It will be called the Opportunity School.
"We worked on this project that we can have some different kinds of schooling opportunities for students that were struggling behaviorally. It's staffed with some special ed units that we couldn't offer individually but as a group we could," he said
Silvus said Marietta City Schools received approximately $102,000 in grants for this project . He estimated $550,000 to $600,000 had been received between all six districts.
"We've offered some of the furniture we have in storage and some of the other districts have done the same thing. That will keep the costs down," he said.
In other business, Silvus said OSports, a Cleveland based architectural firm, asked for feedback from the board to gauge interest in moving forward with generating a bid for a stadium project built on the grounds of Marietta High School.
"The neat thing in working with the legal side of things is they've worked with this process with different schools," district athletic director Cody Venderlic said.
"It takes an idea and puts a more formal plan in place. Whether we proceed or not is up to us."
"Obviously we're not fully committing yet to the site, but because of the challenges there, we are being committed to spending the funds to further investigate it," board president Sam Tuten said. "Instead of having a completely flat site and having no issues, we've been taking steps."
The board also voted to hire Christian Hudspeth for one year as Communications Coordinator starting today.
