Residency challenges to two independent candidates running for Marietta mayor on the Nov. 8 ballot were filed Monday, Washington County Board of Elections Deputy Director Karen Pawloski confirmed Friday.
Ann Labes, who registered to run with a residence listed at 286 Front St., and Jeff Walker, who listed his address as 104 Pearl St., on candidacy papers, were challenged by Jon Grimm.
Grimm has withdrawn his independent candidacy for an At-Large seat on Marietta City Council, Pawloski said.
The Labes candidate petition containing the Front Street address and the Walker petition listing the Pearl Street address were both certified by the board of elections, Pawloski said.
Monday was the last day candidate challenges could be filed.
Labes, Walker and Grimm all have been sent certified letters informing them of a hearing on the challenges set for 9 a.m. Aug. 11 at the Washington County Board of Elections office, 204 Davis Ave., Suite B. All three parties can present evidence at the hearing, including witnesses, Pawloski said. All parties also may bring legal representation. A court recorder will be used.
All four members of the county board of elections will be present at the hearing.
Pawloski said the board tried to give hearing participants as much time as possible to prepare but it couldn't happen much later than Aug. 11 because of the deadline for ballots to be printed. That deadline is affected by the need to send ballots to overseas voters.
