Area cemeteries receive state grants for improvements

2 min read

Several area cemeteries have been awarded grants for improvements through the Ohio Department of Commerce's Cemetery Grant Fund.

Oak Grove Cemetery in Marietta will receive $2,500 to buy equipment and materials to reset monuments, according to a press release from the Commerce Department.

Marietta Public Works Foreman III Christy King, who takes care of Oak Grove Cemetery and others, said the department is hoping to buy a tripod with the funds. The winch-type tool allows the reset of various-sized markers that can't be lifted out by hand and are in locations where the grade is too steep for equipment such as track hoes.

She did not have an estimate on how many Oak Grove stones need reset, "but a tripod will be very beneficial for the repairs," she said.

The Village of Caldwell's Sardis Cemetery will receive $2,500 to repair the Veterans' Memorial.

Monroe County has two sites. Jackson Township's Witten Cemetery will get $2,500 to trim and remove trees. Lee Township's Sardis Cemetery will receive $2,500 to repair and reset monuments.

The grants are funded by $1 of every $2.50 from burial permit fees received by the Department of Commerce's Division of Real Estate & Professional Licensing Division. Cemeteries that applied and did not receive funding this year are encouraged to apply again next year, the press release said.
