PARKERSBURG -- Emerson Elementary School students raised nearly $2,000 in theK-Kids Coins for Cancer project for BrAva, a non-profit organization supporting local families affected by pediatric cancer.

BrAva was created in Marietta by families whose lives have been dramatically changed by childhood cancer. The non-profit hosts the annual Mom Prom to raise money for pediatric cancer and research.

The money raised by Emerson students will directly benefit families with children in active treatment, Co-founder Traci Nichols said.

"Thank you so much," Nichols said. "This is gas for (families) to get to the hospital, rent and food bills paid so that parents get to be with their kiddo."

Coins for Cancer was held in September by K-Kids in honor of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.

Students were asked to bring in coins to compete, as grade levels, to see who raised the most money, K-Kids sponsor Sarah Bragg said. K-Kids is a youth service leadership club chartered by the Kiwanis Club.

"I am happy to raise such a large amount of money in a short period of time," said K-Kids president and fifth grader Lyric Boyd. "This is amazing, in my opinion."

Club secretary Anna Stout, a fifth grader, said her family has been affected by cancer. She wants to see money raised and donated to groups like BrAva.

"We wanted to help raise a lot of money," Stout said. "We wanted to help BrAva."

BrAva supports families throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley. Having children raise money in an attempt to raise awareness of pediatric cancer touches the hearts of the BrAva board of directors.

"I can't tell you how much it means to BrAva," Nichols said. "And even better that I know this next generation knows about us and what it's so important."
