PARKERSBURG -- Oklahoma Christian University is now processing transcripts for alumni of Ohio Valley University, which permanently closed at the end of 2021.
"It took time for us to actually get them into the system, and get the process all set up, but we are now processing transcript requests from Ohio Valley University former students and graduates," OC Chancellor John desSteiguer said. "We're thrilled about that."
A judge in November 2022 granted a motion allowing the receivership handling the property of the shuttered OVU to release student transcripts. DesSteiguer said he was aware of the situation, and didn't want to press the courts, but was eager to begin the process.
"I think things kind of went at their own pace and speed because of the bankruptcy proceeding," desSteiguer said. "We didn't want to push anything inappropriately, but we wanted quickly when we had the chance to help."
DesSteiguer said there has always been a close relationship between OC and OVU, and that when they were given the opportunity to step in, they made a quick decision to do so.
"Everybody wanted to do everything we could to lend a helping hand in the aftermath of the closing of OVU," desSteiguer said.
He said Karen Driskill, OC registrar, was one of the people who wanted to take on the transcripts and help the former students of OVU.
"She is so good at what she does, and she leads her team very well," desSteiguer said. "I'm really proud of Karen."
Sydnee Shipley, a former student of OVU and an administrator for the OVU Advocacy Group on Facebook, said former students at OVU were not taken care of the way they should have been after the closing of the university but that it was great to see a sister school step up.
"It is great to know that at the end of the day, we were taken care of by another institution, our voices heard, and our lives are now no longer on hold," Shipley said. "While this whole situation has been extremely messy this seems to be a nice bookend to this nightmare we've been living the past year; a fellow Christian school coming to our aid to help us out when we were at our lowest."
Shipley said people have started reporting on their Facebook page that they have received their transcripts. Some with comments such as "I received mine as well. Very nicely done, and very quickly processed" and "I received mine very quickly, too."
DeSteiguer said OC has received a good reaction from former students and alum from OVU, so far, and that some have even gone out of their way to show their appreciation.
"We've had some alums from OVU that have actually sent flowers to our reigistrar's office," desSteiguer said. "When you see that kind of appreciation, you just know it was the right thing from the very beginning."
Former students and alum of OVU looking to obtain a copy of their transcript can do so by contacting the OC registrar's office at oc.edu/registrar. desSteiguer said anyone having trouble with the link can contact the OC registrar office at 405-425-5200.
