Phillips Trunk or Treat brings sweet and spooky fun

They all, apparently pass for very nice kids during the school day. So they say.
But as the sunlight began to fade (ominously?) on Phillips Elementary School's second Halloween Trunk or Treat from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, the hidden dark side became more obvious.
No amount of candy dumped in their bags was going to sugarcoat some of the costume choices.
There were some Disney princesses, and a couple of policemen, but one older sister was asked who had the scariest costume. She did not hesitate. "There's a kid here, with two heads, and it freaked me out."
The two-headed kid -- Adkins, age 7, who wasn't too hard to spot -- was allowed to pick out his own costume on Amazon, his father said. The ghoul was actually Makyah Adkins.
Fourth-grader Josia Conant looked like she was wearing a witch costume, maybe. Nope. A spidery costume, maybe. Nope.
It was the Grim Reaper. Of course.
The final blow to childhood innocence was a young witch who was leaving with her family. What was the scariest costume she had seen? "Uh, the Killer Clown," she said in a matter-of-fact tone.
Principal Scott Kratche, who appeared as a construction worker at last year's event, was a pirate, Captain Whitebeard, this year.
He was just as pleased this year with the family turnout and the support and participation of his staff.
"Every grade level plus speech, occupational and physical therapy programs are here," he said. "And our food service, AVI, is giving donuts and hot chocolate."
But then the principal gave in to his Whitebeard character as he answered, an interesting question from a student:
"Hey, have you always had that gold tooth?"
"Yeah, I got it years ago," he said, not missing a beat. Then he gestured at the boy's treat bag, filled with various versions of sugar. "And that's what you get when you eat all that candy."
