Warren BOE receives donations, talks upgrades and renovation plans

VINCENT -- The Warren Local School District Board of Education held its monthly meeting Thursday evening at Warren High School.

The board accepted several business reports including the treasurer and superintendent reports. Within the treasurer's reports, the board accepted the MOA for the deposit of Public Funds with Citizens Bank Company for $8,000,000.

"We work very closely with Citizens Bank Company," said District Treasurer Melcie Wells. "And we greatly appreciate them."

Also accepted, during the superintendent report, was a donation from Mitutoyo USA and Micro Machine Works for equipment for the middle school manufacturing/engineering program, approval of a $115,267.21 bid from the House of Security for the Building 6 renovation to improve and update locks and doors for their key card system and approval of the purchase of two school buses.

One item from the superintendent report was excluded from the motion of approval. It was the authorization to enter into an MOU, Memorandum of Understanding, by and between Warren Local School District, Everside Health, and Hopewell Health Centers for the Warren Health Center Project, a collaborative partnership focused on the successful implementation of an integrated Federally Qualified Health Center located within Warren Local Schools to serve staff, students, families, and residents of the surrounding region.

The item was removed due to board member Bob Allen wanting to receive more information about the Warren Health Center and what treatments would be approved there.

"I would like to see the physical MOU because I haven't seen it yet," Allen said. "I want to know if they would be sending out parental notification and consent, and if they would be administering birth control or other similar advice, because if so, I would have to oppose this due to my beliefs."

A resolution was approved for the operation of the Ohio Valley Educational Service Center's Opportunity School and Cost Sharing.

Personnel matters were also approved and there was discussion about the progress of receiving additional wrestling coaches for the school year.

"I have asked to increase the number of coaches for wrestling, but it has not been approved yet," said superintendent Kyle Newton on the coaching matter. "We have to have a physical MOU to make a motion on the table for extra coaches. For example, we have four coaches for archery, but archery is only a club, it isn't a sport according to OHSAA."

"Those coaches that we do have have made those sports phenomenal," board member Debbie Proctor said about the current coaches. "They've made those teams wonderful."

The next regular Warren Local School District Board of Education meeting will be held Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Warren High School Auditorium, located in the Warrior Annex, at 130 Warrior Drive in Vincent.
