Residents of the WinBeri Place Apartments who were displaced after a fire Tuesday afternoon have been housed in a local hotel or gotten shelter with family members, officials said Wednesday.
The fire impacted 38 residents, one of whom was taken to Marietta Memorial Hospital for treatment. More than 20 residents were housed in a local hotel through efforts of the American Red Cross and the remainder sought shelter with relatives.
The former Harmar Elementary School served as a temporary warming center until the evacuated residents could be placed for the night.
Marietta Fire Chief C.W. Durham said the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Ohio State Fire Marshal. A call to the fire marshal's office was not immediately returned Wednesday.
The fire started on the third floor, just right of center, Durham said.
At least one resident told The Marietta Times an explosion was heard before the sprinkler systems activated.
The fire was out within 15 minutes of the fire department's arrival, Durham said, but the building sustained extensive water damage from the sprinklers.
