WATERFORD -- Waterford High School senior Chip Adams is honing his skills in the Spanish language and on the basketball court.
Adams started studying Spanish in eighth grade in order to communicate better with friends.
"We used to live in Texas and a lot of my friends spoke Spanish, so that convinced me to go into it," he said.
Adams is the president of the Spanish club and was inducted into the Spanish National Honor Society his junior year.
"Spanish Club spreads awareness for traditional Hispanic holidays such as Dia De Los Muertos and Cinco De Mayo," he said.
Adams said the Spanish Honor Society also does fundraisers for awards they give out at the end of the school year and the honor chords students wear at graduation.
After almost five years of studying Spanish, Adams said he's fluent in the language.
Adams also said he plans to keep his academic game high along with his athletic game the rest of the year. His current GPA is 3.75.
"I'd like to stay on the honor roll and finish in the top 10 of my class," he said.
He said his favorite subjects are trigonometry and physics.
"It's about us using math to figure out why stuff works the way it does and I really like that," he said.
Physics is taught by Jason Zaros, who Adams named as his favorite teacher.
"I've taken all three of his classes (chemistry, physics and botany). He's really good at explaining the formulas we use and why they react the way they do," he said.
Another activity that has moving parts is basketball. Adams said he's played the sport his entire life. He has been a member of the varsity basketball team for three years.
"There's always something going on in a basketball game. It's always constant," he said.
Adams said he's learned positive life lessons from the sport.
"It's taught me how to respond to weird situations both in basketball and in life," he said.
Adams said he's learned to be adaptable, having moved a few times in his life. He and his family arrived in Washington County two years ago. They previously lived in Texas, South Carolina, and Sunbury, Ohio.
"I learned how to accept a lot of different people and accept a lot of different circumstances," he said.
Adams said he's enjoyed his career at Waterford High School so far.
"It's a small community. Everyone knows everyone, and you can ask for help with everything," he said.
