ENON VALLEY, Pa. -- East Palestine Justice, a legal group formed by famed environmental activist Erin Brockovich, held the second of two area informational meetings at the Alpine Room in Enon Valley, Pa. on Thursday. The meetings were meant as a way to update the public on pending litigation and testing efforts in the wake of the Feb. 3 Norfolk Southern train derailment and chemical spill.
Attorney Mikal Watts, who gained notoriety for holding Firestone and Ford accountable for faulty tires, walked those in attendance through the current status of a mass tort case against the railroad. East Palestine Justice's water expert Bob Bowcock gave a detailed report of the group's environmental testing and collected data.
The meeting followed an identical one held at the American Legion on Wednesday. It was the latest in informational sessions held by the group, which opened a permanent office at 319 N. Main St. in Columbiana Saturday, since the derailment.
The rail disaster caught Brockovich's attention days after it happened. She first visited the village at the end of February. Brockovich, known worldwide for her involvement in the water contamination lawsuit against utility giant PG&E and played by actress Julia Roberts in the movie with her name as the title, later established a team of advocates and attorneys now known as East Palestine Justice.
