WALKER -- A 13-year-old girl was killed in a Tuesday night fire in Walker.
The name of the individual has not been released, pending an autopsy and positive identification.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The fire broke out in the 5900 block of Walker Road Tuesday evening just before 11 p.m. at a one-and-a-half-story house with a basement.
The home was fully involved when fire crews arrived on the scene, East Wood Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ron Utt said.
The fire quickly spread upstairs. Utt said the roof was beginning to collapse when they arrived.
Crews were unable to get to the girl in time.
A press release from the West Virginia Fire State Marshal's office said three children and two adults were able to escape the fire. One of the children and one of the adults were treated on scene for minor injuries and released.
Fire crews were not able to enter the structure and concentrated on an exterior attack of the fire. Utt said he was not sure how long it took to get under control and finally extinguished. Crews cleared the scene at 5:07 a.m. Wednesday.
Four volunteer fire departments responded, including East Wood, Deerwalk, Mineral Wells and Elizabeth/Wirt. They had a number of fire engines on scene and at least three tankers. They were able to utilize a hydrant that was around 600 feet from the residence.
Wood County Sheriff Rick Woodyard said an investigation has been opened by the fire marshal's office and his department is assisting.
A supervisor at the Wood County 911 Center said the fire rekindled around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and the East Wood, Deerwalk and Mineral Wells fire departments were on scene.
Utt said they were concerned the night before about the fire reigniting with the way the structure collapsed, creating hot spots underneath. The chief said crews spent around two hours on the scene Wednesday morning dealing with hot spots.
Wood County Coroner Mike St. Clair, whose assistant responded to the scene, confirmed a death had occurred in the fire and said the body has been sent to the West Virginia State Medical Examiner's office.
The Fire Marshal's office said in its release an autopsy would be performed and positive identification made.
