PARKERSBURG -- Mid-Ohio Valley residents who want to help an organization that assists individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Mid Ohio Valley will have a chance to do so in coming weeks.
The Arc of the Mid Ohio Valley is having several events to raise funds at the end of January and through February.
The Arc of the Mid Ohio Valley is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families and to reduce the incidence and lessen the effects of intellectual abilities, according to the organization's website.
It serves approximately 3,500 families a year throughout Wood County and the surrounding areas through programs like WV Birth to Three, an inclusive summer day camp, the Secret Christmas project and more, according to the website.
The website shows it is having a fundraiser in conjunction with Texas Roadhouse at 2306 Ohio Ave., Parkersburg, on Jan. 30. Diners in the restaurant who purchase food from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and who show a special flier will have 10% of their total food purchase donated to Arc.
The money raised will benefit the program People First of the Mid-Ohio Valley. According to Arc's website it is a self-advocacy group that empowers people with disabilities to live independently and have a voice in their community. The flier can be a paper copy or a digital copy. The flier can be found on the Arc of the MOV's website.
The organization is also hosting a Valentine's Day Dance on Feb. 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Westbrook Health Services Gym at 2501 Dudley Ave., Parkersburg. The dance is sponsored by Rick Modesitt and is in memory of Gary Hellberg. Arc asks that attendees bring snacks, dessert or drinks to share, according to the website.
Supporters of Arc can attend a cookie decorating class with H&L Custom Cookies on Feb. 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Marietta First Church of Nazarene, 100 Mill Creek Rpad, Marietta.
The event is free for Arc participants and transportation will be provided if needed. Space for the class is limited. Contact Michelle Curtis at 304-422-3151 or michelle.curtis@thearcmov.org to reserve a spot.
The website also said that throughout the month of February Arc will be having sales events at the Arc Thrift Shop's two locations, 904 Broadway Ave., and 1915 Dudley Ave.
The website said on Feb. 2, Groundhog Day, if the groundhog sees his shadow customers will save 50% on merchandise. On Feb. 12, Valentine's Day items are 50% off. On Feb. 29, Leap Day, men's clothing is 50% off.
All winter clothing is half off at both Arc Thrift Shop locations from Feb. 20-25. Every Tuesday in February, books, movies and music cost only ten cents. The Broadway location is closed on Wednesdays and both stores will be closed on Feb. 19 President's Day, according to the website.
Another way people can help the Arc of the MOV is by eating at the People First Cafe. The organization runs a cafe at 1118 20th St. in Parkersburg. It is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The cafe serves sandwiches, burgers, soups, coffee, lattes, fruit drinks, and more.
