BEVERLY -- A Beverly elementary school will soon be getting a new roof.

Fort Frye Local Schools Board of Education members approved a new school roof during a school board meeting Thursday.

They approved a contract with Murray Sheet Metal for a new roof for Beverly Center Elementary at a cost of $746,950.

Board member Johnna Zalmaneck was not at Thursday's meeting. The rest of the board members were in attendance and unanimously approved the contract for the new roof.

The roof at Beverly Center Elementary was put on the school in 1997, according to Fort Frye Local Schools Superintendent Stephanie Starcher. Starcher said the roof is a 20-year roof and has been on the school for 27 years.

"We have really extended the life of it," Starcher said.

Roofs only last so many years as far as durability and there are other issues, according to Starcher.

"It had started leaking and we patched and repaired as much as we could and it just continued to leak," Starcher said. "We had it evaluated by several different contractors and we did an infrared inspection to see the insulation layers."

Starcher said that after the inspection it was decided the roof was at the point where it needs to be replaced. The district will start construction of the new roof at the end of the school year in May. They will have it done by the end of the summer in time for the start of the school year, she said.

During the meeting Starcher presented the board members with notes from some students in honor of School Board Appreciation Month.

"We just want you guys to know you're appreciated and that we are thankful for the work you do," Starcher said as she passed out the notes.

Other business addressed at the meeting included:

≤ Approved the 2024-2025 school calendar

≤ Approved a resolution allowing 2023-2025 membership of the school district in the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

≤ Accepted a donation of $1,000 from the Community Impact Fund through the Marietta Community Foundation. The money will be used to support staff training on FAFSA changes.

≤ Approved one Then & Now invoice. These are purchase orders over $100.

≤ Approved creating a fund for the Stronger Connections Grant. Frontier Local Schools Treasurer Stacy Boldern said the grant is for the Ohio Valley Educational Service Center (OVESC) New Opportunity School in Marietta. According to the OVESC website, the school exists to provide an environment for students who are not able to adjust to education programs that are available in traditional schools.

≤ Approved a change order for the vestibule project for the high school gym entrance in the amount of $50,000.

The next Fort Frye Local Schools Board of Education meeting will be on Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Lowell Elementary.
