Klondike derbies to be held this month

A Scout tradition returns to the Mid-Ohio Valley the week of Jan. 26.

Since 1949, Scouts have been holding Klondike Derbies, winter events where groups of youth test their Scoutcraft skills, leadership, and stamina, pulling handmade sleds between activity stations.

“Klondike Derby is one of the high points of our annual outdoor program”, commented Alan Campbell, 2024 program coordinator. “Even in the deepest snow, our Scouts always have a great time”.

This year’s Derby is titled “Camp Dog Races”, both incorporating traditional sled dog activities, and referring to our popular wet-nosed Camp Kootaga dog mascot, Odin. Kootaga District, Buckskin Council is the organizer of this event.

All units, districts and councils are welcomed to this annual event. Cost is $15 per person, including Saturday lunch, for registered Scouts BSA youth and leaders. View the leaders guide and sign up to attend or help out at https://www.buckskin.org/events/2024-kootaga-klondike-derby/. Event updates will be posted on the Kootaga District, Buckskin Council Facebook Page.

Units are also encouraged to get their units registered for summer camp at Camp Kootaga. This will be the 102nd continuous camp. Camp Kootaga is in the top 25 of the oldest continuous Scout Scouts with summer programs in the United States. Follow Camp Kootaga on Instagram and Facebook. Register for Scout Camp at www.buckskin.org.

Starting at $2.99/week.
