A Marietta man was arrested Tuesday on charges related to an alleged sexual assault of a juvenile, according to a press release from the Marietta Police Department.
During their investigation police learned the juvenile was communicating with the suspect via Snapchat, and that the suspect had used Snapchat on Dec. 30, to arrange a meeting with the juvenile victim, which led to the alleged sexual assault, the release said.
According to the release, on Jan. 9, the police received information about a possible sexual assault of a 14-year old juvenile by a 21-yeaer-old male. The Marietta Police Department, with help from the Washington County Sheriff's Office, executed a search warrant at 329 Third St., upstairs, at the residence of the suspect, Alexander Ray Rector, 21.
While conducting their search, officers found a handgun in Rector's bedroom. Rector is prohibited from possessing a firearm until charges for which he is currently under indictment in Washington County for previous offenses of violence are dismissed. The charges are felonious assault, unlawful possession of dangerous ordnance, improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle and improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation or school safety zone, the release said.
Rector was found inside the residence and was arrested on felony charges of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, disseminating matter harmful to juveniles, and having weapons while under disability, according to the release.
The Marietta Police Department said in the release that they would like to remind parents to be proactive in monitoring their children's social media accounts. The department said the majority of juvenile sexual assault cases they investigate involve some form of social media contact by the perpetrators.
