WILLIAMSTOWN -- Williamstown has two candidates for mayor and two candidates for city council in the upcoming election.
Current Mayor Paul Jordan filed for reelection. He defeated long-time mayor Jean Ford in the 2020 election and served as a Williamstown City Council member with her for eight years. He couldn't be immediately reached for comment.
Current council member Jim Stage has filed for mayor. He said he has been on council for eight years. He also said since he retired professionally 12 years ago, he will have more time to serve as mayor.
"I worked for Fenton Art Glass for 18 years and for BF Goodrich for 29 years," he said. "I still come in to consult for a Goodrich affiliate, so I must have done something right."
Stage said if he was elected mayor, he would focus on infrastructure and children's activities.
"We used to have kickball in the park and time where the kids could paint. I'd like to bring things like that back," he said.
City Clerk Stephanie Stengel said two seats on council will be available in the upcoming election, with two people having filed.
Incumbent Shane King was sworn in March 2023 due to previous council member Randy Dick's resignation in February 2023. King is responsible for the pool and the park commission along with the old Williamstown elementary school demolition. He said he and one of his daughters would attend every meeting to find out about current events in the city.
"I've served about a year now," King said. "I've been getting my feet wet, doing a little bit of everything."
King said someone asked him if he plans to put up signs for his campaign. King said no.
'It's a small town. People know me or they don't. It won't hurt my feelings either way," he said.
Resident Marsha Houston also filed to run for council. She couldn't be immediately reached for comment.
