By Staff reports 2 min read

Two performances through Marietta College are scheduled Thursday and Friday.

"Medea," a play by the ancient Greek writer Euripedes, opens at 8 p.m. Friday at the Friedrich Theater.

"Music to Love," a performance by pianist Barbara Nissman, will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at Peoples Bank Theatre as part of the college's Esbenshade Series.

Nissman, 79, also will discuss the music and stories about her favorite composers. She has been described as among the last pianists in the tradition of Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Rubinstein and is recognized as an authority on the music of Franz Liszt. Nissman's international career was personally launched by Eugene Ormandy, who had previously engaged her as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Nissman has performed with the leading orchestras of Europe and America and has worked with major conductors including Ormandy,

Riccardo Muti, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski and Leonard Slatkin.

She was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2023.

The Esbenshade Series is funded by the Frederica G. Esbenshade Memorial Fund and features five free performances for the public. Ticket information for Nissman is available from the Peoples Bank Theatre box office or online at https://peoplesbanktheatre.com.

"Medea" will be performed by students in the college Theater Department. The Greek tragedy is the most known of the plays by Euripedes, who was born five centuries before Christ.

In Greek mythology, Medea was the wife of Jason, who captured the Golden Fleece. He decides to leave her for another woman, and she takes revenge by killing their sons and his new bride.

Other performances are at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 22 and March 23.

The show is free for students, faculty and staff with an ID at the door. For others, tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for children and are available at https://mariettacollege.yapsody.com/.
