Sheriff warns senior citizens of scam

MARIETTA — The Washington County Sheriff is warning senior citizens about a scam targeting them, according to a sheriff’s office media release.

The sheriff’s office has “received calls about a scam that has been contacting senior citizens stating they won the ‘American Senior Citizen Association Sweepstakes and they need to pay a federal tax amount by cashiers check to receive their money,” the release said.

The office cautioned senior citizens not to give any money or personal information to the people, calling it a scam.

Scams can be reported to the Ohio Attorney General’s Fraud Division at 800 282-0515, according to the release. Scams can also be reported at www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/About-AG/Contact/Report-A-Scam.

Those who believe they have provided personal information or money to a scammers can contact the sheriff’s office at 740 376-7070.
