PARKERSBURG — Whether it is performing on stage, drawing or hosting a Christian YouTube channel, Brady Lamp’s faith continues to guide him through everything he does.

The 15-year-old ninth-grader at Parkersburg Christian School has been involved with the church all of his life, but fully decided to give his life over to Christ when he was 14 and accepted Jesus Christ as his savior.

“I was going through a bad patch in my life and I felt like something was missing and I found Jesus and he was what I was missing in life, he was the true joy I was looking for,” Lamp said. “I had always gone to church and had considered myself as a Christian but I wasn’t living the Christian lifestyle until I gave my life to Christ.”

His faith has led him to start a YouTube Channel, which he calls “Jesus Freak,” a phrase he heard and thought it was perfect for what he was looking to do. On the channel, he posts Christian content ranging from Bible verses to him doing short devotionals on a variety of subjects where he incorporates scripture, teaching people about the Bible and more. Videos can last from a few seconds to around five minutes.

“I post Christian content and help other teenagers with their journey of being a teenage Christian,” Lamp said. “I was bullied in school and faced other problems.

“I didn’t know who to go to. I realized that the only person I could go to was Jesus. I noticed how he turned my life around and I wanted to help others the same way he helped me.”

Lamp has been doing the YouTube video for around eight months, usually posting once a week. Since starting, the channel has had over 2,000 views and Lamp said he usually gets over 100 likes per video.

“I wanted to teach and help others with their problems,” he said. “I felt like I was being led by Jesus to spread the Word of God somehow and I thought this would be an amazing way of doing it.”

The feedback has been good with people thanking him for the content, he said.

Lamp’s favorite Bible verse is Psalm 25:5, “Guide me in your truth and teach me for you are God my savior and my hope is in you all day long.”

“I love this verse so much because how true it is and how it helped me through some hard times,” he said.

He attends church at 14th Avenue Gospel Mission.

Lamp has also become involved in theater within the community, his church and at school.

“I always wanted to do acting of some sort and discovered theater a few years ago,” he said. “It changed my life and I feel Jesus led me there to do something.

“I was never into sports, but when I found theater I just fell in love with it, the creativity, the acting, all of it.”

He was in productions of “Matilda: The Musical” and “Spongebob: The Musical” at the Actors Guild of Parkersburg. He did “The Grinch” at his church. He will be in “The Show That Goes Wrong” and “The Pilgrim’s Progress” at school.

Lamp hadn’t done any true theater until he was 11 when a friend told him about it and he auditioned for “SpongeBob.”

“I just fell in love with it as soon as I got in,” he said. “I am trying to do any theater I can at school and church.”

As part of an arrangement through his school, he will be taking a theater class at Parkersburg South High School next school year.

In addition to acting, he also likes to draw and has been doing that since he was young.

“I love art as well,” Lamp said. “I always have. It calms me whenever I am stressed.

“It is my happy place.”

He has done a variety of pieces from a rooster for his grandmother done in pencil to a picture of a mouse inspired by the video game, “Moss,” that he did in ink to a painting he titled, “The Boy That Dreamed” and more.

Lamp is currently drawing the whole cast of “The Wizard of Oz” using colored pencils and oil pastels for his uncle.

He is looking to incorporate his religious teachings into his art as a way of helping people with whatever they are struggling with and find ways to relate to what is going on.

Lamp is the youngest in his family which includes his father Nathan, mother Vickie and sister Taylor.

He would eventually like to travel around the world and has started saving for trips he would like to take to Japan, South Korea, Ireland, Scotland and elsewhere.

“I love exploring, traveling and being outdoors,” Lamp said.

He is starting to look at what he might do after high school. He is looking at the possibility of getting a degree in theater arts and is looking at colleges right now he might want to attend.

“I would love to become an actor, but if that does not work out, I will become some kind of pastor or missionary,” he said. “Right now, my biggest passions are God, family and theater.”

Through it all, Lamp’s faith continues to guide him on his life’s journey.

“I’m so blessed I have found my passion in art, making videos on YouTube and theater,” he said. “I have realized how faithful God has been for me and I realize after all that Jesus has brought me through and everything he’s done for me in my life he didn’t leave me then and he won’t leave me now.

“I will continue to stay strong through the hard times and stick to the light.”
