The Marietta-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau has acquired the Historic Marietta Trolley, a longtime fixture of local tourism, and will begin operating a new season of tours starting this month.
The trolley, originally purchased in 1984 by Tim Amrine, was later owned and operated by current Marietta City Councilman Harley Noland, who provided guided tours of the city for more than 20 years. With Noland stepping away from the role, the CVB purchased the vehicle to continue the service and maintain what it describes as a valuable piece of Marietta’s tourism infrastructure.
Noland said his decision to step away was largely due to a desire to focus on other personal projects.
“The trolley consumed a lot of hours every day,” he said in an interview. “I want to concentrate my time on some other projects.”
Reflecting on the handoff, Noland expressed confidence in the CVB’s ability to carry the trolley tradition forward.
“They do a good job already at welcoming people to the city, and that’s what I always thought I was doing with the trolley: putting our best foot forward and showing people all the attractions and the friendliness of our city,” he said. “It’s natural for them to take the trolley on.”
“We’ve seen how the trolley benefits visitors by connecting them to the rich history of our city,” said CVB Executive Director Deana Clark.
She added that the acquisition helps ensure the continuation of a familiar and well-regarded experience for both visitors and residents.
The CVB plans to introduce a series of new offerings in the upcoming season, including holiday-themed tours and other special events.
