A juvenile in a work release program faces new charges after allegedly stealing a Washington County vehicle this week.
Sheriff Mark Warden said that on Tuesday afternoon, a juvenile in the work release program left the work area, gained access to a Washington County juvenile court vehicle on the site and drove away.
According to Warden, officers from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Marietta Police Department and Ohio State Highway Patrol went out to search for the vehicle and came in contact with the juvenile and the vehicle along Ohio 676 between 2:30 and 3 p.m.
In an attempt to get away, the juvenile crashed the stolen vehicle into a Washington County cruiser, Warden said. An emergency squad was dispatched to the scene and found the juvenile was not injured. The deputy in the cruiser also did not sustain any injuries, Warden said.
The juvenile was taken into custody in Lancaster to be later appear in juvenile court. No bond is posted at this time. The police cruiser was towed.
Warden said the officers were lucky that no one at the scene was hurt.
