Marietta Board holds special meeting to discuss filling empty position
The Marietta City School District Board of Education held a special meeting Monday morning to discuss and establish the appointment schedule for the vacant board member position.
After the resignation of board member John Lehman during the regular meeting on July 28, Ohio Revised Code states that the board has to take action in 30 days but only starting 10 days after the official resignation.
“This leaves us with 20 days to take action,” said Board President Cody Parman.
With such a tight window to work with, the board established a plan which is scheduled to result in the appointment of a board member after the working session Aug. 13.
“If everything goes as planned, we’ll have someone appointed next week,” he said.
Parman said there is an application on the district’s website for those who are interested in applying for the remaining two-year term. The appointed individual will serve through the end of 2027.
The application closes at noon on Thursday which allows for the community to have three full days to apply for those who are interested.
The board decided to schedule a working session at 6 p.m. Aug. 13 for invited applicants to attend. Prior to the working session, the board will look over all of the applications after the deadline and select the best fitting candidates to attend the Aug. 13 session.
“The point of the working session is to communicate with the selected applicants about what the administration wants,” said Parman. “It’ll also give us a chance to observe them.”
The working session will include introductions and an overview about the expectations and responsibilities of being a board member.
Parman said that after the working session, they’ll go into executive session and make a decision that night. He said a decision will be made that night as long as the schedule works out as planned.
He said Superintendent Mary Schaeffer officially began her position Aug. 1 and will be part of the selection process.
“We’re very excited to have her with us,” he said.
For those who are interested in applying to fill the vacancy on the board, the application can be found at www.mariettacityschools.k12.oh.us/article/2338247. Once filled out, applications can be sent to Cody Parman at cparman@mariettacsdoh.org.
