Ohio EPA announces public meeting on Marietta injection well application

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency will host a public meeting from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Marietta High School auditorium on DeepRock Disposal Solutions’ application to drill a Class I, non-hazardous injection well at the company’s property at 20225 State Route 7, Marietta.

The meeting announcement says state EPA representatives “will share information and answer questions.”

The meeting will provide information about the proposal and Ohio EPA’s permitting process.

According to the announcement, liquid wastes are managed by injecting them into deep underground wells, known as Class I wells. These wells are drilled thousands of feet below any underground sources of drinking water into isolated rock formations.

Before drilling can begin, a permit must be obtained. However, receiving permission to drill does not mean that the well can operate; a separate permit is required to operate the well.

This meeting only concerns the proposed Class I well application. The company operates five Class II injection wells for oil and gas wellfield brine, which are regulated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. If Ohio EPA issues a draft permit for the proposed well, there will be an opportunity for public comments at that time.

Starting at $2.99/week.
