6 seeking 3 seats on Frontier Local Board of Education

NEW MATAMORAS — Early voting for the Nov. 4 election begins Tuesday, and there are six candidates running for three seats on the Frontier Local Board of Education.

The candidates running for a position on the board include:

¯ Maggie McConnell, 37, of Newport, is a service assistant at Leslie Equipment Company. She hasn’t run for office before and said she is looking forward to helping the district grow in various areas.

“During my daughters’ elementary years, I volunteered extensively with the PTO where I witnessed some challenges and familiarized myself with some of the issues our school faces,” said McConnell. “We may be a small district but we have a huge amount of talent and potential within our students and teachers.”

McConnell said being a school board member is one way she’d be able to strengthen and give back to the community.

¯ Brenda Wilson, 65, of Newport, was employed at the district for about 30 years and retired in 2024.

She’s never run for a position on the board or other elected office.

She said she wanted to run for the position on the board to make education a first priority in the district.

¯ Jeanne Kerns, 57, of Wingett Run, is a personal banker and hasn’t run for any elected positions.

She said she wants to be a voice for all of the students and to ensure they’re getting a quality education in a safe and healthy environment.

¯ Rachele Slonaker, 39, of New Matamoras, is an elementary school teacher at Belmont Elementary in Pleasants County and has never held any elected positions. Slonaker said she wants to help make a difference in the district.

“We have amazing educators in our district, and I want to ensure they have all the resources they need to provide the highest quality education possible,” she said. “I want to make sure our faculty, staff and students have the support they need to excel.”

Slonaker said as a teacher, she understands the challenges staff and students face each day.

The other candidates, Amanda Wolfe and Ivy Ferrell, both of New Matamoras, did not return messages seeking comment.
