PARKERSBURG — The man indicted in the 2014 murder of Cindy Ball and the woman charged as an accessory after the fact pleaded not guilty at their arraignments Monday.

Walker resident Gregory A. Casto, 56, in custody at the North Central Regional Jail, and Martha Jane Stephens, 66, of Waverly, appeared before Judge J.D. Beane in Wood County Circuit Court. Neither spoke except to answer questions from Beane and enter their pleas of not guilty.

Both were arrested last week following their indictment by the Wood County Grand Jury. Casto is charged with murder, which carries a potential life prison sentence, and concealment of a deceased human body. Stephens is charged with accessory after the fact to murder, which has a maximum sentence of five years.

Stephens was released after her arrest on a $10,000 bond.

Casto is being held without bond. A bond hearing was set for Nov. 17, during which Beane will also consider a motion by Casto’s attorney, Bill Merriman, to dismiss the case.

A trial date for both Casto and Stephens was set for March 10.

Merriman did not return a call seeking comment after the arraignment.

Stephens is represented by attorney George Cosenza, who declined to comment on the case Monday afternoon.

Ball’s body was discovered, with a shotgun wound to the back of the head, in a heavily wooded area off Sugar Camp Road in Wirt County on Oct. 24, 2014. She was last seen two days earlier, leaving with someone from the Overtime Sports Bar on Emerson Avenue in Parkersburg.

Casto was indicted last week by a special session of the Wood County Grand Jury and arrested on Tuesday. Stephens’ charge was revealed when the indictment was unsealed on Thursday. She had been arrested and arraigned the previous day.

The West Virginia State Police referred questions about the case to the Wood County Prosecutor’s Office. Prosecutor Pat Lefebure has declined to elaborate on any connections between Ball and the suspects, citing the fact that the investigation remains open.

In a release announcing Casto’s indictment and arrest, Lefebure credited advancements in technology, additional testing and ongoing investigative work by law enforcement.
