PARKERSBURG — A program about a West Virginia environmentalist will be presented as part of the Americans Who Tell the Truth portrait exhibit at the South Parkersburg Public Library.
Ten portraits among the more than 280 painted by Maine artist Robert Shetterly will be on display at the library and will include the late Larry Gibson who fought against mountaintop mining in West Virginia. The portraits recognize Americans who have made significant contributions to creating justice, those who Shetterly calls “Truth Tellers.”
Known as the Keeper of the Mountains, Gibson opposed mountaintop removal mining and was a president of a foundation opposing the process. He died in 2012.
The program will be held from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday at the library where the 10 portraits of Shetterly will be on exhibition through Nov. 17. The program will include a presentation of Gibson’s efforts and the effects of mountaintop removal mining
“We hope visitors to the Americans Who Tell the Truth exhibit will be interested in learning more about this West Virginian environmental hero,” said Adeline Bailey, a member of Mid-Ohio Valley Climate Action. “But every one of these portraits introduces a person who has worked for justice in our country, and we are planning to feature others in programs during the exhibition.”
The exhibition, supported by a grant from Mid-Ohio Valley Climate Action, is free during regular library hours. The 10 portraits are from Shetterly’s Earth Justice Truth Tellers series.
Books and other media written by or about the people portrayed will be featured by the library.
Hours for the library, 1807 Blizzard Drive, are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and closed on Sunday.
