Family Career Fest returns for 12th year

Washington County students from grades seventh through twelfth and their families are invited to the 12th Family Career Fest from 4-7 p.m. today in Marietta.

Hosted by Building Bridges 2 Careers, the event will take place at the Washington County Junior Fair Building at 922 Front St.

“The purpose is to bridge the gap by offering place-based exposure opportunities by having the students and their families get in touch with employers,” said Community and Career Connected Learning Coordinator Kristi Leonard-Webber. “The goal was to host it in the evening so families can attend.”

BB2C is a nonprofit organization with the goal to provide real-world experience and job-focused activities for students to engage in and prepare for the workforce.

The event features nearly 70 local businesses and organizations available to provide career information and opportunities.

Leonard-Webber said the event is free to the public and pizza will be provided.

“Each student will receive a Career Exploration Passport, this will be their guide through a scavenger hunt-style journey organized by Ohio’s 16 career clusters,” said Leonard-Webber. “The passports are a way to give the kids structure.”

Upon arrival, students will receive their passport which will guide them through the career fair. The passports can be stamped or signed by company individuals as the students and their families walk through the fair. The passports will also include conversation starter prompts as the student visits each organization or company.

Businesses and representatives are encouraged to bring interactive displays and handouts for each student as the event goes on.

The career fields include health care, manufacturing, technology, creative arts and more. Students will learn about how to build a resume, interview and plan for the future.
