Marietta City Council to hold first meeting of 2026 on New Year’s Day
Elected municipal officials in Marietta will be given the oath of office on New Year’s morning at the Armory on Front Street.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 9 a.m., followed by Marietta City Council’s first meeting of the year at 10 a.m. Council President Susan Vessels said the special meeting will take the place of council’s first regular meeting of the year.
Council will act on two appropriation bills, including adopting the 2026 budget, and a resolution for the sale of personal property owned by the city by an internet auction.
Three new members will be on council for the next term. They are Katie McGlynn, Ron Wesel and Jeffrey Schultheiss who won in the November general election.
Schultheiss defeated fellow independent candidate Mike Scales, who ran for re-election, in the 1st Ward. Wesel, a Republican, defeated incumbent Erin O’Neill, a Democrat, in the 4th Ward. McGlynn, a Democrat who previously served on council, defeated Republican Janet Bond in the 2nd Ward.
At Large Councilmen Harley Noland, a Democrat, and Republicans Ben Rutherford and Jon Grimm and Councilman Bill Gossett, R-3rd, ran unopposed.
Council President Susan Vessels and Treasurer Cathy Harper also ran unopposed.
The offices of mayor, auditor and law director were not up for election this year. The next election for those offices is in 2028.
