PARKERSBURG — Monday was proclaimed high school girls basketball day at the Wood County Commission, where the achievements of the 2025-2026 season were celebrated.

Special certificates were presented by the commission to team members from Williamstown High School, Parkersburg South High School and Parkersburg High School.

“This is your day,” said Commissioner Jim Hamric, who retired as the athletic director at Parkersburg High School.

Parkersburg High and Parkersburg South met for the first time in state tournament play earlier this month in Charleston. The No. 2 Big Reds defeated the Patriots 59-53 to cinch the Class AAAA championship — its first since the 2018-19 season — after losing both regular season games to Parkersburg South.

Fan attendance at the Charleston Coliseum was the most ever for a championship game, Hamric said.

“I was so proud to be a Wood Countian,” Hamric said. “You are so fortunate to have fans in Wood County who love you.”

Williamstown High ended the season in second place at the state Class AA tournament in a 50-26 game against James Monroe High School.

Team members were introduced by head coaches Danny Bunch of Williamstown High, Ed Davis of Parkersburg South and Chris Murray of Parkersburg High, each commenting on the talents and hard work of their teams and all the players in attendance.

“Thanks to the commissioners for having us here today,” Davis said. “The girls were just awesome, all of you.”

Basketball brings discipline and order to life, according to Commissioner Jimmy Colombo, who spoke of his daughter who played basketball at Parkersburg Catholic High School.
