The Castle Historic House Museum will present Virtual History Camp: Divided & United: 1860-1870s the weeks of Feb. 2-26. Activities will cover various topics related to the era of 1860-1870s, primarily the Civil War, with expert presenters from the region.
According to Kyle Yoho, Education Director at The Castle, "Over the past few years The Castle has received numerous requests to make our renowned History Camp classes accessible beyond our 3rd-6th grade audience. Given our recent foray into a virtual camp in 2020, we are happy to finally provide a History Camp for all ages." Yoho added, "This year's 'All Ages History Camp' will be a little different than a traditional camp. For the convenience of our 'campers' we have broken the camp into just a couple classes a week over four weeks. Each week will feature two classes with bonus classes offered some weeks."
The virtual history camp experience is geared toward ages ten and up. Yoho indicated camp participants can choose to register for individual activities or the entire camp.
Camp activities will take place using Zoom. Individual sessions are priced at $5 per class or $35 for all ten classes.
Virtual History Camp guest presenters include Christina Hartlieb, Executive Director, Harriet Beecher Stowe House, who will present "Harriet Beecher Stowe's Underground Railroad Connections"; Mackenzie Sommers, a history enthusiast and reenactor will present "High Fashion: Civilian Ladies Fashions; Sergeant First Class Joshua Mann, Historian for the Ohio Army National Guard will explore "Becoming a Soldier: Uniform & Equipment; Professional Musician Brandon Bankes will perform Civil War Tunes and explain the stories behind each song; John Connors, Military Musician and Historian, will perform Civil War bugle calls while addressing the importance of the bugle in regulating military life; Kyle Yoho, Education Director at The Castle will provide a hands-on activity baking classic pound cake while discussing ways people at home aided loved ones and friends serving in the war; "Creating an Image: How Civil War Photos are Made" by tintype photographer and artist Drew Tanner will demonstrate the science behind tintype photography; Linda Showalter, Marietta College Special Collections will provide a glimpse into the archives of the Marietta College Legacy Library Special Collections to reveal the voices of local men and women during the Civil War; "Modern" Medicine: 1865 & 2020 by Brian Horgan, PA-C, board-certified physician assistant, will compare treatments from 1865 to today; and Brian Cushing, cocktail historian, will take us back to the beginnings of mixed drinks while cocktails of the time.
