First Baptist of Marietta to celebrate 200 years

First Baptist Church of Marietta will celebrate its 200th anniversary on Sept. 8 and 9.

On Sternwheel Festival weekend, the congregation of the First Baptist Church of Marietta will mark 200 years of worship with an open house, an anniversary worship service and a concert, all open to the public.

According to church documents: “On Saturday, the 5th day of September A.D. 1818, we, Ephraim Emerson, William Churchill, John Thorniley, Bain Posey, and Mary Case, met in the easterly part of Marietta and formed ourselves into a church subscribing to the following articles of faith and covenant.” And so the First Baptist Church of Marietta took its place in the Marietta community to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“We are excited to be celebrating 200 years as part of the Marietta community and hope that area residents will drop by on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. to view historical displays, tour the church and enjoy refreshments,” Senior Pastor Chad Mugrage said.

On Sunday, Sept. 9, Pastor Mugrage said the Traditional 9 a.m. and Contemporary Alive 11 a.m. services will be combined for a 10:30 a.m. anniversary worship celebration, and the Buckeye Travelers Band will perform in concert from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

A family band headquartered at Caldwell, the Buckeye Travelers Band performs a variety of gospel, country, and rock, new and old music. Organized in 1980, the band has played in 33 states and with many famous entertainers, including Reba McIntire, Connie Smith, The Tennessee Mountain Boys, Ernest Tubb, and Lorrie Morgan.

“We look forward celebrating the church’s 200th anniversary and to becoming even more involved in supporting the Marietta community in our third century,” Pastor Mugrage said.

First Baptist Church is located at 301 Fourth St., (corner of Putnam and Fourth streets). For more information about the church, visit www.firstbaptistmarietta.com
