Varga

On February 17th, 2023, Al Varga went to join his loving wife, Pauline, and other family members in Heaven. Al was born on March 21, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio to Mary and John Vargo. A son of Hungarian emigrants, Al grew up in the west side of Cleveland along with his sister, Violet, and brother, John. He had fond memories of his childhood which included selling hotdogs at the Cleveland Municipal Stadium, working at the West Side Market, and driving a taxicab. The first person in his family to go to college, Al graduated from Kent State University with a degree in Architecture. He served in the Army at Fort Belvoir, VA.

In 1959, he married Pauline Fusek. Al and Pauline moved to Marietta, Ohio in 1966, where Al practiced architecture, and they raised their two children, Maria, and David. Al had a full life – he loved his family, had many special friends, and a long, productive career as a licensed architect. Al loved to play golf and cards with friends, and especially enjoyed snow-skiing. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Marietta Country Club, and attended the Methodist Church.

In 2017, Pauline and Al moved to Zanesville, OH. At the time of her death in Zanesville, Al and Pauline were married for 59 years. In Zanesville, Al lived at the Primrose Retirement Center and enjoyed being closer to his children and grandchildren. Al is survived by his daughter, Maria (John) Thomas, his son, David (Minnie) Vargo, his grandchildren, Rachel and Olivia Thomas, Hannah (Monty) Parrish and Sophia Vargo, his brother-in-law, Nick Varju, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on April 28th at 3:00 p.m. at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Columbus, Ohio. This Spring, his life will also be celebrated with a joint memorial service in Canfield, OH for Al and his sister-in-law, Carolyn Wehr. As per his wishes, Al’s body was donated to the OSU Body Donor Program. At a later date, his and Pauline’s remains will be interred at the Mound Cemetery in Marietta, OH.
