Michael Hamilton Webb, 87, of Grape Island, Pleasants County, WV, died peacefully on Aug. 31, 2023, at Marietta Memorial Hospital, Marietta, OH.
Mike was born May 15, 1936, to the late Deleno and Evelyn Barkwill Webb in St. Marys, WV. A 1954 graduate of St. Marys High School, he held degrees from Glenville State College and West Virginia University. He also attended the University of Cincinnati and completed postgraduate studies at Potomac State College and Radford University. A lifelong educator, Mike taught science, biology, chemistry, and math at Bruceton Mills High School, SMHS, and Parkersburg High School. He was a football, baseball, and basketball coach for most of his teaching career at St. Marys, and he served as assistant principal and athletic director at SMHS prior to his retirement from public schools. He also taught math at Washington State Community College for 10 years. Mike served for more than 40 years as a high school and college football official. After his retirement, he continued to serve the West Virginia Secondary School Activities commission as a clinician, interpreter, and officiating supervisor. A tireless advocate for player safety, he served on the National Association of Interscholastic Athletics rules committee and helped develop many safety features for equipment as well as modern concussion protocols. Mike was inducted into the National Federation of State High School Associations Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Mid-Ohio Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. He was named SMHS Alumnus of the Year in 2014.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 46 years, Judy, and one brother, Deleno "Pat" Webb. He is survived by his children, Joe Webb (Lorie) of Williamstown, WV, and Sara Summers (Jonathan) of Harrisville, WV; three grandchildren, Anna Webb of Pittsburgh, PA, Amanda Webb of Buckhannon, WV, and Sam Summers of Pittsburgh, PA; two brothers, Jim Webb (Vanda Wall) of Canonsburg, PA, and Bill Webb (Sharon) of Huntington, WV; three sisters, Ann Culp, Alice Johnson, and Virginia "Ginny" Webb, all of St. Marys; sister-in-law Judie Webb of Huntington, and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is a cousin, John Barkwill of Winter Park, FL, who was like a lifelong brother to Mike.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, Sept. 3, at 4:00pm at Ingram Funeral Home in St. Marys, WV, with the Rev. Clare Sulgit officiating. Friends may call from 2-4pm at the funeral home. A private interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery in St. Marys following the service.
