N. Jean Smith Moury, 92, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 8, 2024 at Marietta Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Jean was born on January 29, 1931 in Amanda, Ohio to Harmon G. and Eva Marie Bullock Smith. She graduated from Amanda-Clearcreek High School in 1948 and married her high school sweetheart, Ray Moury on July 3, 1948. Being employed with Big Bear Supermarkets, Ray moved his family to Marietta in 1957, when Big Bear Store # 27 was opened in the Frontier Shopping Center. In 1964 they became the operators of the Evergreen Shade Steak House restaurant. Later, they both became affiliated with Evergreen IGA Food Store. Jean was a Past Matron and 50 year member of Marietta Chapter #59, Order of Eastern Star, a past president of District 25 and a Past Grand Representative. She was a Past Guardian Secretary of International Order of Jobs Daughters, Bethel 40 and a former member of Business and Professional Women of Marietta, Betsey Mills Club Girls Council, Pioneer Ladies Civitan Club, and had volunteered at Marietta Memorial Hospital for many years. As her four daughters were growing up, she was involved in the Girl Scouts as a leader and committee member. She was an active member of Reno Memorial Christian Church for more than 57 years, serving as a past Church Clerk and a past officer of the Women’s Service Organization.
Jean enjoyed the many trips and cruises she and Ray took to numerous foreign countries and tropical islands. Her favorite pastimes were reading, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and family times when they would spend the afternoon visiting and playing the newest board game. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 55 years on June 29, 2004, an infant son, Jeffrey Ray, a grandson, Jonathan Ray Becker, and her brother, Richard N. Smith.
Jean is survived by her daughters, Carol Sayres, Ocala, FL, Judith Smithchild (Blair Dyer) Cutler, OH, Michele Covell (Jeffrey) Marietta, OH and Lisa Weaver (Ray) Williamstown, WV. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Tracy Carter (Pam), Cynthia Mitchell (John), Lisa Carter, all of Florida, Bryan Roe (Stacy), Cincinnati OH, Tyler Roe, Chicago IL, James Sayres (Tara) of Trenton IL, Adam Ray Weaver (Alexandria), Parkersburg WV, Jeremy Cutshaw ( Malinda Barnhart) of Athens OH and ten great-grandchildren, Jeffrey , Andru , Macklin, Declan, Hazel, Gray, Lucas, Ellie, Ashur, and SeQuoyah, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, sister-in-law, Lillian Mowery and brother-in-law, Robert Moury.
Visitation will be 6PM-8 PM on Friday, January 19, 2024 at Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike St., Marietta, OH 45750 and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday, January 20. Eastern Star Services will be conducted at 7:30 PM Friday evening.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Reno Memorial Christian Church with Pastors Teddy Tackett and Samuel Bungard officiating. A private burial will follow in the Spring at the Family’s convenience.
The Family would like to thank Amedysis Home Health Care for their loving care to Mom for the past few months, especially Nurse Emily Seaman and aides Jean Gibson and Tiley Miler. Your care made all the difference in her world. We would also like to thank the men and women on the Reno VFD who never failed to answer our call when we needed them. Finally, we wish to thank the entire Nursing Staff at Marietta Memorial Hospital 2 West, Pod A. Your kindness and caring will never be forgotten.
