Marcia F. MacCullagh, 89, formerly of Virginia Beach, VA, died Friday July 26, 2024 at Lake Taylor Rehab Hospital in Norfolk, VA. Marcia was born on Dec 15, 1934, in Waterbury CT, to Earl and Hazel (Freeman) Flower. She attended Crosby High School (class of 1952) and was active in the Connecticut state Pilgrim Fellowship of the Congregational Church.
While attending Marietta College, she met the love of her life, fellow Marietta College student, Richard "Dick" MacCullagh, who also at that time, served as the pastor of the Presbyterian churches in Barlow, Watertown, and Vincent, Ohio. She was a lifelong singer and after participating in the annual Messiah performances in Marietta, continued to participate in community and church choirs the rest of her life.
Marcia and Dick graduated from Marietta College on June 3, 1957, and were married at Putnam Congregational Church on June 4, 1957, the Rev. J. Glover Johnson presiding, Roger D. Buchert soloist. That autumn, they moved to Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Center, MA. In 1960, they moved to Zumbrota, MN, where Dick was ordained in 1961. Marcia worked as a secretary wherever they lived, as far east as Harpswell, ME, and as far west as San Miguel Zambales in the Republic of the Philippines.
She was predeceased by her parents, Earl and Hazel Flower, her brother, William "Bill" Flower, and a granddaughter, Carol Ann Kippenhan. She is survived by her husband Dick, sons, Doug (Kitty) MacCullagh of Gulfport, MS, and Bruce (Marianne) MacCullagh of South Hadley, MA, as well as sister-in-law Lynne Flower of Benson, AZ, grandchildren Aimie (Alec) Zale, Joseph (Heather) Costello, Aiden MacCullagh, Elijah MacCullagh and Ruben (Elizabeth) Bieller, nephews Tim Flower and Greg (Paula) Flower, 10 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be in Marietta, Ohio, sometime in the future. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Richard and Marcia MacCullagh endowment fund at Marietta College. For information regarding services, contact ArlineFlower1@comcast.net.
