Marian Taylor, 93, died June 10, 2024, at Harbor Cove Memory Care. Her two daughters, Susan Taylor Roesch and Lee Taylor Mercado, her son-in-law Bill Roesch and two granddaughters, Elizabeth Colekman-Roesch and Katherine Zemke were with her in her final moments. Although dementia had eroded away much of her memories over the last few years, her Christian faith remained her firm foundation and she left this world imbued with the love and prayers of her family. In addition to those present, Marian is survived by her son-in-law Eric Mercado, three other granddaughters, Chloie and Skyla Mercado, and Emily Geraci, and two great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Teresa Geraci. Marian was born in Huntington, West Virginia, to Robert and Ann Payne. She was an only child with big blue eyes, blond curls, and a big smile. Marian loved reading, playing tennis, going to local dances, the movies, travel, and art- most of all art. Marian went to Marshall University in Huntington for two years before leaving to go to the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, where she studied watercolor painting. She now considered herself a commercial artist. When she got home from Sarasota she did the window arrangements and drew the advertisements for the Diamond department store in Huntington. From there Marian went to Charleston and did the 'extra' ads for a local advertiser who had the coal companies as his main contract. Marian met her husband, Robert Taylor, during this time. They married in Huntington and then moved to Wilmington, Delaware to follow his job with Dupont. Their first baby was Susan with whom they were delighted. Lee was born four years later, another wonderful addition to the family. Although she did some artwork for local stores and created beautiful Christmas cards, it was not until after Robert's retirement, when he built a studio overlooking the marsh for her, that Marian began painting watercolors in earnest. On Hilton Head, Marian painted the beauty of God's creation every day for over two decades. Her artwork can be seen in many homes on Hilton Head Island as well as on the walls of her children's and grandchildren's houses. Throughout her life Marian devoted herself to her faith and sharing it. She taught children's Sunday School, led bible studies and read devotionals daily. In her 80's, Marian who had been struggling with arthritis for decades began to lose her sight as well and eventually stopped painting. With Robert's death in 2017, she lost her closest friend and partner- someone who made her laugh everyday. The combined loss of her art and husband hit hard. Marian leaned into her faith and family and was encircled in both everyday. Her family thanks the First Presbyterian Church HHI, her caregivers Laronda and Shay, and Harbor Cove Memory Care for supporting and loving Marian the last years of her life. A memorial service will be held August 17 at 2:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church Hilton Head.
