Chris Edward Deem, aged 78, of Marietta, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. Born on August 18, 1946, he was the youngest son of the late Lawrence and Mary Deem of Marietta. Chris faced a long and courageous battle with Type 1 diabetes for over 40 years, and in the past 3 years, he also contended with kidney failure. Despite these challenges, his spirit and determination were unwavering.
A proud alumnus of Marietta High School's Class of 1964, Chris furthered his education at Marietta College, Ohio University, and Franklin University. He was also a private in the United States Army Reserves.
In 1970, Chris turned his passion into a career when he purchased Marietta Cycle Center, where he became the area's Harley Davidson Motorcycle dealer for over 37 years. He shared this journey with the love of his life, Rhonda, whom he married on December 27, 1973. The two worked side by side, building a thriving business and a lasting legacy until their retirement in 2007.
Chris was a man of many passions, but none greater than his love for motorcycles and the open road. His summers were often spent riding across the country, with Sturgis, South Dakota, being one of his favorite destinations. Whether on two wheels or behind the wheel of a car, Chris had a deep-seated love for everything mechanical. He was a true genius when it came to fixing things, and his ability to understand and repair anything mechanical was admired by all who knew him.
Beyond his mechanical talents, Chris was a loving husband, devoted father, and a cherished friend. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rhonda, and their daughters, Melanie Deem of Marietta and Jennifer Deem-Bradford (and her husband, Jon) of Marietta. Chris is also remembered by his three brothers: Larry (and his wife, Sharon) of Vermilion, Ohio; Steve of Baltimore, MD; and Joe (and his wife, Terry) of Marietta, Ohio, as well as several nieces and nephews who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Amedisys, DaVita Dialysis, and the Reno Volunteer Fire Department for the compassion and care they provided, especially in the last three years of Chris's life.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Chris's honor to the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley and the Reno Volunteer Fire Department, reflecting his love for his community and his passion for helping others.
Chris's legacy is one of love, resilience, and an enduring spirit that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his kindness, his skill, and his unquenchable zest for life.
A viewing will be held on Saturday November 16th from 2-6pm and funeral services will be held Sunday November 17th at 2:00pm at Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel across the street from his beloved Marietta Cycle Center building that he built.
