Althea Doris Burton Laferriere Southwick was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, on November 14, 1922, and passed on February 21, 2025.
Preceding her in death was her devoted husband, Dr. Niles E. Southwick, her parents, Arthur and Mamie Grace Charlebois Burton, her son, Colonel Bruce R. Laferriere, her grandson, Drew B. Mayle, and her sisters, Reatha M. Burton and Christina J. McCutcheon
Althea leaves behind her daughter, Ann (Clyde) Mayle and grandchildren: McKenzie Mayle, Todd Laferriere, and Stacey (Ron) Hamilton, and her bonus daughter, Edna (Dick) Taylor. Numerous nieces, nephews, family members, and friends will be left with the task to honor her spirit.
Althea lived a noteworthy life and was a source of love, understanding, and friendship to countless people during her 102 years. Over the course of so many decades, she handled many trials and tribulations with dignity, courage, humor, and grace. She never shied away from an adventure during her many travels, notably her swimming with dolphins at age 90 and her parasailing at 91! Traveling in a hot air balloon, eating tree grubs with aborigines, and driving her snazzy convertible are perfect examples of her zest for life.
A remembrance and celebration of her remarkable life will be held at a future date, when her ashes will join her late husband's off the shore of Cannon Beach, Oregon. Over the years, many joyous and loving memories were made at the family's cabin near Haystack Rock.
A special gratitude is acknowledged for the exceptional care provided by Waterview Pointe Nursing Home and The Appletree Staffs, and her personal care givers: Pam Sewell, Sandy Guilinger, and Sandy Perkins, who made it possible for Althea to reach this incredible milestone. Appreciation is extended to the Amedisys Hospice, as well.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mid-Ohio Valley Cremation Society.
