John W. “Jack” Richards Sr., 87, of Waterford, OH, died Saturday April 5, 2025, at his daughter’s home in Vienna. He was born in Grafton, WV, a son of the late James and Kathleen (Cockrell) Richards.
He served as a Field Engineer for UNISYS (formerly Burroughs Corporation) from 1958 to 1989 before venturing out on his own. A proud United States Army veteran, he remained highly engaged with military and law enforcement agencies long after his service, dedicating himself to teaching and training. He served as an instructor for the U.S. military, the U.S. Judo Association, the West Virginia State Police Academy, the Ohio Peace Officer’s Training Council, and the Ohio Sheriff’s Office. Additionally, he was a 1st Degree Shotokan Karate Black Belt and a 5th Degree Black Belt in Judo. He played a key role in establishing the Parkersburg Police TAC team, earning the affectionate nickname “TAC 8.” His influence also extended into the weightlifting community, where he made a significant impact by purchasing and maintaining the gym for Parkersburg Catholic. He was known for sharing stories about his beloved animals, and his endless knowledge of handguns, rifles and shotguns.
He is survived by his wife Jean D. (McDougle) Richards; five children Sheila Marra (David) of Bridgeport, John Paul Richards (Connie) of Parkersubrg, Jacquie Duley of Parkersburg, Jacqueline Richards of Vienna, and John William Richards, Jr. of Parkersburg; two step children Ann Horton of Parkersburg and Arthur “Tony” Pickens of Wheeling; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; mother-in-law Donna J. McDougle; brothers and sisters-in-law Tim Rankin (Lila), Sally Shaw, Matthew Rankin (Renna), Ben Rankin (Lisa), and Jim McDougle (Bria); and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son Craig Richards, brother Robert Richards, father-in-law Owen C. McDougle, and brother-in-law Curt Shaw.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday 11:00 AM at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Father John Rice as celebrant. Burial will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be Thursday 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg.
