Ronald Dean Friend

July 21, 1952 July 13, 2025

Ronald “Ron” Dean Friend, 72, of Marietta, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on July 13, 2025, surrounded by love just eight days before his 73rd birthday. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and storyteller, Ron lived his entire life in the place he called home–Marietta–where his quiet legacy continues to ripple through the lives he touched.

Ron proudly served in both the U.S. Navy and Army Reserves, and retired in 2012 after a 40-year career with the railroad. His greatest professional accomplishment came when he led the effort that resulted in a significant change to railroad retirement policy–a change that impacted thousands of workers and their families nationwide. He was never one to boast, but those who knew the story knew the quiet determination behind it.

In his later years, Ron became a beloved presence online, where he shared personal reflections and stories that resonated deeply with his readers. One of his writings was titled My Dash–a tribute to living life fully in the time between birth and death. “Live your dash to the fullest,” he wrote. “Enjoy it as much as you can. For you only get one dash. Make it a good one.”

Ron certainly made his dash count.

He was also the heart behind the Marietta High School alumni dinners–monthly gatherings that brought former classmates and friends together to reminisce, laugh, and reconnect. What began as a small idea turned into a cherished tradition, thanks to his consistent care and friendly presence.

Ron is survived by the love of his life and wife of more than 50 years, Deborah Friend; his daughter Lori Hanson; and granddaughter Railyn Hanson.

A private family remembrance will be held. In lieu of services or donations, the family simply asks that you live your dash fully, love deeply, and carry kindness forward–just as Ron did.

McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home is assisting the family and messages of sympathy may be sent at www.Lankfordfh.com.
